Adults, Teens, and Youth ages 8 and up

Progressive Programs for All Ages

Students at Mountain Shadows Aerial Silks join a section of classes in a Level ONE (Beginner), TWO (Intermediate), or THREE (Advanced) program. All sections meet twice a week. Classes consist of a warm-up, silks training, simple choreography, and conditioning excersizes designed to prepare students for more advanced training. What are silks classes like? Check out the FAQs below, or experience for yourself in an intro class.

Adult Programs

Level 1 - Beginner: Adults and Teens ages 16 and up start their aerial training in a Level 1 class. No previous circus or acrobatics experience required for Level 1. In this program, students build a secure foundation and learn to climb, tie foot locks, do simple poses and sequences, and focus on developing the strength required for future training. Students can expect to be ready to advance to Level 2 in 6 to 12 months with consistent attendance and practice.

Level 2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Advanced) programs build on the foundation established in Level 1 classes and support and challenge students as they continue to develop their skills. Level 2 and 3 students also have the opportunity to perform in the annual student showcase and to audition for other productions.

Youth Programs

Safe, Supportive Training: We begin training youth at age 8 and up. In youth classes, young students learn to safely work on their aerial skills using correct technique and always focusing on building the necessary strength and flexibility young students need to be successful. Fitness and Focus Aerialists work hard. Our youth students build incredible strength and coordination as they practice.

Advancement: Most youth students will practice in a Level 1 program for about 12 months before being ready to audition for a Level 2 program and becoming eligible for performance opportunities in our annual student showcase. Older youth students who are ready for advanced training may eventually audition for our Teen Level 3 program.

In a world where too many children spend too much sedentary time with screens, silks training keeps our youngest students fit and healthy both physically and mentally.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the age requirements?

Youth classes are for ages 8 to 15. Adult classes begin at age 16. Are you too old to do silks? NO! We have amazing students of all ages building strength and confidence - getting strong and doing it beautifully!

Do I need previous experience?

Nope. Bring your enthusiasm and a good attitude and you can do aerial silks. Our level 1 program is designed to help you build a strong foundation. Exercses both in and out of the fabrics will prepare you for more advanced movements. When you're ready, you'll take that experience into upper level programs. Many of our thrilled to discover that they can do so much more than they ever expected as a result of consistent practice.

I have experience. Where do I start?

Intro classes are designed for students who are new to silks. If you have previous experience, contact us to schedule a private or semi-private intro class with an instructor who will evaluate your experience and recommend the best program for you.

Are there weight restrictions?

Our equipment is rated to support all body types. In Level 1 programs, students learn poses and simple sequences that can be performed low to the ground. Level 1 students practice climbing as preparation for performing skills higher up in the fabrics, but climbing is not required at this level. Level 1 classes are challenging and will provide students plenty of opportunity for developing strength and flexibility.

Do you offer drop in classes?

Many aerial studios offer drop-in classes, but at Mountain Shadows Aerial Silks, we don't believe drop-ins best serve our students. Building the strength and developing the appropriate technique to learn aerial silks safely and successfully requires regular practice. We require all ongoing students to train at least twice a week. We even offer additional open gym times for free for current students to do additional practice on their own schedule. Drop-in students tend to slow down the progress of the existing class and require the instructor and other students to back track while the drop-in student is "catching up." Because we ask for a little more commitment from our students, our students progress more quickly and build good technique faster.

What comes after Level 1?

New students begin in a Level 1 program and work through a 6 - month curriculum that builds basic skill and the strength required for advancement to Level 2. Classes meet twice a week. Most new students can expect to advance to Level 2 in 4 to 6 months, depending on their attendance and work in class. With consistent practice and hard work, students advance to Level 3 for even more challenging movements and performance opportunities. Advancement to upper level classes is by audition. Audition requirements are posted in the studio.
